Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a type of plastic surgery that will reshape a woman’s breast to be smaller. This is often desired by women who have very oversized breasts. There is actually a medical term for this: hypertrophy. This can happen when a female enters puberty or soon after. It can happen very quickly, as the breast will grow and enlarge to the point that a female can feel uncomfortable; a woman may have issues with back pain, as well. It is not known why this condition happens, but with breast reduction cosmetic surgery, this can be treated and a woman can have a more normal shape and the extra weight that her back was having to support will be removed.

When this type of plastic surgery is performed, the goal is to create breasts that are more proportional to a woman’s body. In addition, if a woman has breasts of different size, this procedure can be preformed to downsize one of them, thus creating a symmetric form. While the breast reduction is being done, a surgeon can also change the shape and firmness of the breast. In some cases, nipple surgery will need to be performed in order to reduce the size of the areola or to reposition them.

When deciding to have this plastic surgery, measurements and photos will be taken by the surgeon’s staff to provide a base for before and after photographs. Before a woman can be operated on, most plastic surgeons will have a mammogram done to the patient to ensure that are no other medical issues.

The operation is done under anesthesia. Markings will be made on the breasts so that the surgeon will have a guideline of what needs to be done. Incisions are made to create skin flaps on both sides of a woman’s breasts. Excess skin, tissues and fat will then be removed. Usually, because the size of the breast will be greatly reduced, to end up with a more natural looking appearance, the nipples are moved to a proper area. When they are moved, they will still be attached by nerves and blood vessels in most cases. If a breast reduction must be made that requires an extensive amount of tissue and fat to be removed, the nipples may then need to be removed completely and then repositioned.

The cons of this type of plastic surgery are that once surgery is done, a woman will find her breast swollen, sore and bruised. Usually medication can help if the pain is not tolerable. Bandages must be worn for several days. Exercise is not permitted for a couple of weeks. It is not recommended to do any lifting what-so-ever so this may be somewhat of an inconvenience. In a lot of cases, a doctor will recommend that a surgical bra or an athletic bra be worn for some time. A person will have stitches, and these stitches will be removed after approximately three weeks or so. If a woman had to have her nipples completely removed and repositioned, she will lose sensitivity in this area. As with any surgery, infection or reaction to the anesthesia is always a remote possibility.

The pros to this type of cosmetic surgery are that a woman can greatly have back pain reduced. With the weight of the excess fat removed from her breasts, a woman will find that her back usually will stop aching. In addition, with extra large breasts, most women will feel self-conscious and clothes are difficult to find that fit properly. Once the breasts are reduced to a standard size, a woman will have better confidence and clothes will fit more properly.
