The attainment of oral health demands attention to the elements of good dental care. Parents and dentists work together to provide children with those elements. In that way, parents and dentists seek to provide children with a lifetime of oral health.

Five factors can help a child to develop a predisposition to make good dental care a part of his or her daily routine. First, a child must be educated concerning the need for removal of those elements that can cause tooth decay. Still parents know that a child needs more than a chance to learn about how to prevent tooth decay. A child also needs to feel compelled to put into practice whatever he or she has learned.

In order to put a child on the road towards oral health, parents and dentists should work together to encourage the development of the right attitude. In addition, parents and dentists must pay attention to a child’s beliefs, values and perceptions. With luck, those factors can predispose a child to take-up behavior that can insure attainment of long-lasting oral health.

Once parents and dentists have put a child on the road to oral health, then they need to be sure that the same child does not stray from that very important route. Children should hear praise when they show a willingness to perform the acts associated with good dental care. Older children might get some sort of recognition or encouragement at school.

Finally, parents and dentists need to remove any barriers that might stand in the way of a child who is on a quest for oral health. Children will not brush their teeth if they feel unsure about how they are supposed to handle a tooth brush. Parents and dentists must make sure that children feel confident about brushing their teeth.

At the same time, parents and dentists must make an effort to put in front of each child the resources that he or she needs in order to pursue good dental care. A child should have a personal toothbrush. A child should know that he or she can use the toothpaste that is in the home. Dentists might want to help schools provide elementary students with toothpaste and a toothbrush.

Of course, parents and dentists realize that the ultimate "trick" to pull on children calls for an understanding of childish dreams. Every child dreams about becoming an adult. Every child wants to demonstrate the mental capacity of an adult.

A child does not become an adult overnight. In the same way, a child does not show an instant willingness to copy adult behavior related to good dental care. Still, parents should not throw up their hands and give up.

Suppose that parents and dentists can show children that attention to oral health is part of being an adult. When parents and dentists manage to link attention to oral health with the entire spectrum of adult activities then they enable a child to carry-out the daily tasks that lead to the attainment of oral health.
